Copper is one of the few coloured metals.

As it is a reasonably ductile metal, copper can be easily polished and is commonly used in restoration plating either as a stand alone finish or more commonly as an electroplated deposit prior to nickel and / or chrome plating.

Copper can be plated in it’s dull state or bright plated. A standard dull deposit can be attained using the base chemistry of copper sulphate and sulphuric acid. It should be noted however that these solutions will not adhere to all surfaces, so often a “flash” plate of another deposit type may be required.

Dull or bright plated

A standard dull acid copper plate can be employed for long electroplating periods in order to put a “high build” up of copper on the surface, this is ideal to cover imperfections in a components surface, which can then be polished to a bright finish with skilled polishing techniques.

To avoid polishing and the high use of copper from solution, a bright solution should be employed. A bright copper plating solution will allow an attractive finish to be attained in a fraction of the time with a lot less effort and removes the need for polishing, which is a skilled process on its own.
